View Full Version : An Awful Day For Aviation
Sadly there have been three fatal crashes killing five people today.
A Cessna crashed at Staughton in Leicestershire, a Sea Fury at Sywell and a Comanche on Osea Island, Essex.

My sincere condolences to all concerned. A very sad day for light aviation indeed.

The Comanche was from Stapleford. A former instructor of mine was on board. One of the best people I've ever flown with. A great loss - still can't believe it.
What a terrible day. Condolences to all families.
The Sea Fury belonged to Paul Morgan - a collector of historic aircraft and a thoroughly nice, professional chap. My condolences to the Morgan family.
The Comanche was a PA24 Single Comanche (an 'A' model) out of Stapleford.

What is a 'A' type? Never heard of it.

Sorry, I don't know either. There are several 6-seater Pipers based at Stapleford, and the one whose registration I do know was still around yesterday.

An 'A' model is the four seat variant - it's older and only has two windows on each side. There then followed the B and C models and also the T (for Turbo). Piper used to nominate all of their aircraft alphabetically but switched to numbers and names around the time of the Warrior.
I am unwilling to mention names because they have not been released in the press - at least as far as I know.
The aircraft was, however, group owned. Reg G-ARIE

Anybody know any details about the Lincolnshire crash ?
Apparantely it was a Rand KR2 that went down, and I'm curious to know what happened, as I've just bought one!

Perhaps American nationals were involved or maybe the aircraft have recently been on the FAA register. I'm just guessing here.

I think the FAA were involved as each plane was US manufactured, and I believe it is normal for the "home" regulatory authority to have an interest in or be advised when there is an ocourance.
Changing the subject but sticking to topic, another awful weekend for UK aviation, I feel quite shaken just thinking about it.

Couldnt agree more Bounce.
Bad crash yesterday, another tragic event today. Only got a few details of it so far, it being a WW2 P-39, single seater. Pilot is dead.
Saw the video and heard the reports, but we are Pilots, and we know better than to judge. Lets wait to hear what really happened.
May he and the Vampire Pilots rest in peace, and thoughts to the respective families.
