In the USA I believe FAR 91 205 b, lists the instruments and equipment required for VFR flight.

I would appreciate someone posting the UK (JAA EASA) equivalent regulation reference.

For the UK, Air Navigation Order Schedule 4.SCHEDULE 4 Articles 28(6) and 37(2)
Aircraft equipment
1.—(1) Every aircraft of a description specified in the first column of the Table in paragraph 4 which must carry equipment specified in this Schedule must be provided, if flying in the circumstances specified in the second column of the said Table, with adequate equipment.

For AOC Operations then the references you require are in EU-OPS:

OPS 1.650 Day VFR operations — Flight and navigational instruments and associated equipment.

OPS 1.652 IFR or night operations — Flight and navigational instruments and associated equipment

If not AOC operations then the ANO reference above for UK registered aircraft.
