Hey there, Quick question for you all. Anyone know of a good place to get some mountain flying in the South West of France. I am a PPL but would be just as interested in a single pleasure flight as a full training course. Any wisdom would be very much appretiated.

consider ST-Girons Antichan (LFCG) ; the have a lot of glider's activity in summer there too. Just next to the Pyrenées. It is really French though, not sure if there have any activity in English.

AFPM : French mountain pilots association : AFPM L'aviation sportive de montagne EMP (http://www.afpm.org/)
Click on "Où pratiquer " (where to practise)
"Aéro-Clubs Montagne" (Mountain flying clubs)
Go to item : "Pour pratiquer le vol en montagne dans les Pyrénées" (Pyreneans)
You get 7 flying clubs praticing mountain flying
Hope that helps ....

mountain flying in the South West

Would that mean in 64, 65? I believe there are a few mountain rated pilots in the region, some of which will surely have FI ratings, but that area is not where mountain flying happens per se, at least not on aeroplanes although there seems to be quite a bit of altisurface microlight activity in the Pyrenees.

On the other hand if you are willing to drive to LFYS Ste. Léocadie (66) -- or fly to LECD in Spain, as LFYS is restricted, then you can get in touch with Philippe Salvato ([Aéroclub Icaria - Sainte-Léocadie] (http://www.aeroclubicaria.fr/)) aka Captain Yellow who is basically the mountain instructor in the Pyrenees. He also does aerobatics so you can do a bit of both if you so choose, and even perhaps throw in a bit of gliding in Cerdanya (LECD) which is only 5 min away by air, or about 25 min by car.

Forgot to say, you cannot get a "full training course" in the Pyrenees, for that you have to go to the Alps. It's also not a "course" in the sense you would expect but it follows a rather more Zen-like approach: you will be ready when you will be ready. There is a lot more info on this scattered around this and other forums.
