A pilot was forced to make an emergency landing in a field, after losing the propellor from his Stampe biplane at 2,000 feet. John Smith and James Green were flying from Lincoln to Shoreham, when the engine started mis-firing over the Thames. Shortly afterwards, the propellor came away, and they landed near Uckfield.

What time of day? At about 1600 ish on Sunday I caught a brief glimpse of a light blue biplane flying low and slow a few miles south of Uckfield, close to the Ringmer gliding strip, which was active launching motorgliders. The engine sounded as though it was throttled back. I could see that it wasn't a Moth (no DH style fin) and initially identified it as a Stampe, but on reflection think it was more probably a Jungmann, given the shape of the fin and the undercarriage, so probably not the a/c in your post. Anyway, hope all was well with the crew.

They were on the way back from Fenland which has a very special place in the memory for James 'P' Green.
Perhaps someone from the BAeA could find the story in a back issue of the newsletter circa 1986.
Jim has lent out and not recieved back his copy!
