View Full Version : ipad for company manuals

Anybody out there that uses an Ipad to read the company manuals?
Now that not even the OM-A is available in hardcopy anymore I need to upgrade to some kind of e-book reader...
How's the readability? does it look like staring at any other computer screen or is it more "E-ink" like a Sony E-book reader or Kindle?

thanks

If the company want all the manuals to go online then I think they should issue all crew with iPads or similar, or at least subsidize them. They'll be expecting us to turn up at Dispatch more than 5 mins before the bus next......uhh, oh yes....:ugh:

I don't have one but have looked over the shoulder of guys using the Ipad for manuals. Its the dog's, and very readable. As with most electronic books the indexing is poor (done by software rather than by a professional indexer?) but that's the editors not the Ipad.

Not sure if it handles the automatic amendment system but you can always re-load each time you come through the Street.

And it does all the rest of the Got-To-Have stuff as well :)

Goodreader (http://www.goodiware.com/goodreader.html)

Works fine costs about a dollar for manuals in html, pdf's (also ppt .doc etc. etc.)

I am loving it! :ok:

The new (and free) Apple iBooks app does PDF files too, and it works rather nice. I also have Goodreader on my iPhone, but now that there is iBooks I don't think it's needed any longer.

One of our chaps has an iPad with all manuals and Jepp charts on it. It works really well. Other than an official "stamp" it is the nearest thing to an Electronic Flight Bag.

Where are jepp charts available on line? I cannot recall. Saw a gent using the pad recently to study manuals and it looked nice, but best of luck getting the company to pay for it. Just buy your own, cheap bugger. :}

There is an app for that! Camera for ipad.
You can use your iphone as a webcam...better than a built in cam anyways.

Where is the best place to buy an iPad? And those that have one, would you recommend the 16, 32, or 64 GB. Thanks.

I didn't encounter any problems after upgrading to iOS4 on my 3GS. Works great, and I use it a lot. The iPad price came down a lot in the past days, I still paid $8000+ for my 64G+3G just a week ago :/

Carry a small wireless router with you. Just make sure you encrypt the connection so the people in the rooms around you don't log into your connection.

How can you overcome the problem with hotels with only ethernet cables?

Another solution could be the iPad Wifi+3G, using a 3G SIM card. But roaming fees might make this an expensive solution. Or you'd have to buy different SIM for different countries. Can be a pain in the neck, especially because it's a micro SIM that you need.

If you have an iPhone, you can pair it with your iPad, using the iPhone as a wireless router.

There is software out there - I use MyWi - on a jailbroken 3Gs.

Apple charges an extra $160 or so for the 3G enabled iPad. MyWi costs $10.

No extra sim card needed, save $140. Short range, password enabled etc., but a little thirsty on power. Slip on a battery pack ($20) and you're still $120 ahead without the hassles of an extra contract etc.

FWIW, the newer generation Android OS phones do the same trick out of the box, no software purchase needed.

Has anybody priced a 16Gb, or 32Gb without 3G in Wanchai?

My friend just bought a 16Gb in Canada for HK$4600 incl taxes.

Thanks.

Apliu St, Sham Shui Po. If you're expecting an ipad knockoff don't bother. They're about as close as a $HKD200 mp3 player is to an ipod.

I use an app I wrote myself. It allows me to download and view the En Route Supplement Australia via 3G, Wifi or manually via a PC. Its currently on the Apple App Store (iERSA).

I've just added some new features so that I can upload word and PDF documents (ie. checklists) and view them.

I can also download and view a pre-flight briefing (Area forcecast, TAFs, and NOTAMS, ATIS, RAIM)

Screenshots attached. I'm going to publish the update on the App Store if its useful to others. If you have a US iTunes account I'll be giving away 20 free download keys when the update is released in a week or two. Send me a private message and I'll put you down for a key.

I see you all rushing to put your hands in your pockets when it is a CX responsibility to provide manuals. Have you forgotten that we were all provided whatever manuals we wanted. Sure we had to do the amendments but THEY paid for it all. They now get to pay f$@k all, have shoveled the costs over to us and you guys are rushing out to spend your hard earned cash to save CX even more money!! Wake up, join the AOA and let's make a change by saying no to this treatment. Amen

I agree Black Cloud, I was about to post a similar statement when I realised the reference to 'Company docs' was probably the only way people could have an Ipad discussion which was remotely aviation related and slide it past the mods. (when you can get a Macbook Pro for similar $$$ why would you bother with a gen 1 Ipad???)

I agree. Line pilots not being able to obtain paper copies of a very important manual is a disgrace. As Black Cloud says, the accountants have duck-shoved responsibility, time and cost onto the employees regarding access to the Operations Manual. As much as paper amendments are a nuisance, the physical process of doing them ensures that changes are generally readily apparent. And with a paper manual one can make notes and highlight information.

What's the bet the FCOMs will be next?

Sorry to head off on a tangent, but has anyone managed to get e-Docs to work on a Mac? I tried installing it, followed all the instructions, but it seems to be dead and doesn't download anything.

got it working on Snow Leopard, followed the instructions that on intraCX ...
doesn't synch all the time, though. sometimes it takes a 2 week timeout, then it's fine again ... no idea how and why

the three.com.hk website was basically offline for most of the day due to the high traffic due to the iPad launch...

SMOC, I don't think the ipad runs any regular Mac OS, my last post was a reply to Buzzbox's question re. e-docs and Mac.
I don't think you could sync e-docs directly to the ipad, could you?
Should work via a shared folder on the Mac at home and a second sync Mac <-> iPad..

Yeah - I reckon a direct link from CC to our mobiles with a company requirement that we can be advised of changes via text message would be great!

As for the Ipad - great - got one from the US. Makes doing my tech quiz so much more fun!
