I'm getting a £300 whirlywheel tomorrow!

The weather looks as though it may be alright for the weekend (I refuse to tempt fate by being any more positive about it) so I'm planning a little trip down to Shoreham tomorrow to buy myself a whirly wheel - the most expensive one ever bought by the time I've paid for the aircraft rental and instructor.... <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" /> . .. .Anybody got any tips for Shoreham? Anything that I need to look out for as this is my first time there?. .. .Other than that - what are you guys planning for the weekend? Shoreham, well, I'm not a resident there but from the times I've flown into there, its VERY BUSY! The ground rises to the north & I remember ending up very high over the threshold of runway 21(?) because I stayed too high on base leg. . .. .However, I did enjoy loitering with the reggie-spotters before pushing my way through them, going through the gate labelled 'aircrew only' and strolling across the grass to my aircraft. A moment of oneupmanship.. .. .Its a scenic airfield, try and go round the front of the terminal building to admire the Art-deco architecture. I believe its the oldest licensed airfield ion the world.. .. .PS - probably going Southend - Lydd on Saturday morning.. . . . <small>[ 28 March 2002, 10:39: Message edited by: Who has control? ]</small>

Have fun. The mad March hares are skipping across the grass at Waltham, whilst the aeroplanes perform Easter bunny hops along the runways. I hope that tomorrow I shall be chuntering along just north of the M4 at 120 knots, watching the stationary traffic below, en route to Kemble and Garston. The weather looks set to remain good into Saturday. Happy Easter flying to you all.

Warm weather, a Saturday... hmmm, I reckon Farnborough Radar frequency is going to be like a zoo this Saturday! I'm not flying until Tuesday (hope the wx is OK still by then!?) but might just tune in to 121.25(?) to listen to the mayhem <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="smile.gif" /> . .. .Re- Shoreham, flew overhead once on a Navex with instructor before I got license - but they were to obusy to let us in! Could see queue about 10 aircraft long a tthe threshold from overhead. Looks like a nice spot though, so hope to make it in there at some stage...

Shoreham's proximiy to the coast, river & railway makes it very easy to find, so no excuses there I'm afraid. As mentioned above, it can be very busy.. .. .I just hope that your whirlywheel isn't faulty & require replacing <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" />

On a serious note.. . .. .It is likely to be the busiest weekend of the year so far. If the frequency is split into Approach and Tower, don't descend deadside until you have been given clearance to do so by the tower. You may see foreign pilots doing so, not understanding this procedure, but it will upset ATC and is dangerous.. .. .Don't be suprised to be no 12 in the queue to take off & no 4 or 5 in the circuit.. .. .Allow at least 20 minutes for refuelling. .. .Be patient on the r/t, you will get a call in eventually. .. .Don't expect circuits, touch & goes or instrument approaches when its this busy. .. .have fun ?

I can fly also, and have done so for many years. . .. .Your comments do concern me and please think carefully about how much you longed to fly before you could learn to. These people are often in the same boat and will never be as lucky as you or I.. .. .You are not a celebrity because you can fly, they are not admiring you, they are admiring the a/c. . .. .Get with it, if you stove the a/c on the way home it is the a/c they will mourn for, not you.

Monocock.. .. .One of the disadvantages of the Internet is that it is easy to misinterpret what people are saying without other visual clues such as facial expressions. Who has control? was making a post in jest as far as I can tell and judging by his nick then I would guess that he is a bit of a jester as it implies that no-one in the cockpit has control.. .. .Therefore, he and indeed myself, was making a funny which should be taken in the vein that it was intended.. . <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" /> . .. .Simjock - cheers, good point. Who has control,. .. .There's a fierce irony in your post, for me at least. I diverted into Shoreham a couple of years ago, and after lunch in town, I also walked through the gate, with not only the reggie-spotters looking on, but a few pilots, too.. .. .With cute blonde girlie on my arm, I walked over to the newest, most expensive, best-equipped, most powerful aircraft on the ramp, did a brief pre-flight, got in, started up, and taxied off. Did the short-field take-off and climbed out at slightly over 2000fpm (not an aerobatic aircraft, just a comfy machine for covering lots of miles). I can't help feeling that all those C150 pilots felt slightly less smug.. .. .THE ONLY POINT I am making is, that there is nothing sadder than someone in a rented spam-can who thinks he's it. I know where I am, what I can and can't do, and I used to enjoy light aircraft flying before I found a better hobby. I pole jets around the sky and get paid for it, but that doesn't make me special, just lucky. So, before you buy that pair of white leather flying gloves from Transair for your first solo cross-country, bear in mind that it's not who you are, but how you fly. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="smile.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="smile.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="smile.gif" />

Sennadog. .. .I (and by the response, several others) understand exactly where I was coming from with my observations.. .. .I have worked hard for my licence and work hard to keep it. I have friends who wish to god that they could have the same privilige, perhaps knowing that they never will.. .. .Reading ("facial expressions" not required) that someone feels oneupmanship as he strolls out to his aircraft doesn't fill me with anger, just sadness. . .. .Why do some people who are about to fly an a/c feel they are "one up" on the chap who is observing??? . .. .I fly because I love it, I take as many non-flying enthusiasts up as I can because I know they love it.. .. .Some of the "observers" may not be allowed to fly. For the architecturally inclined Shoreham is a typical 1930's terminal building (built 1934 -Grade II Listed), very much of its time. Worth a wander around and do inspect the gents loos on the first floor -Art Deco and palatial -a real throne room!!. .. .Shoreham is apparently the oldest licenced airfiled in the country, dating back to 1910, on land owned by the Miles family.. .. .Beagle Pup and Basset were built here.. .. .HQ of PFA today.. .. .There, lesson over.. .. .Has this lightened the thread up??. .. .DOC

gijoe, b*gger! Unfortunately, I had already bought my shiny new Computer by the time you posted so at least I've put something back into the industry I suppose....:D

Shoreham wasn't as busy as I expected but I managed to muddle my way through the ATIS, Approach and Tower without too many problems. It's great to land on tarmac after grass with a full length RWY for a change and there were some very pretty aircraft on the apron. I particularly liked the the arrivals and departure information with your AC's reg on the board - nice touch I thought!:)

Didn't see any blondes, unless you count the Lab that was sitting outside of the terminal;)
