Best longer trips

Afternoon all,

Im looking for some nice long land aways to try and help my Father-in-law grow his confidence with his PPL. We have recently tried the Manchester-Liverpool low level route and out to Canaerfon which was an interesting day. We quite fancy the east coast somewhere or further up north. Looking for trips about 2/3hrs long or ones we can do in a day before we start with the overnighters.

We fly from EMA or Norwich, he has a PPL with 100hrs, I have 750 and CPL IR etc so we can always get in somewhere if it becomes IMC.

For confidence building, what about some of the pleasant southern grass airfields - Popham or Sandown IOW both spring to mind.

There's some nice airfields up here. Perth, Fife, Oban, Glenforsa to name a few... ;)

If it is northwards and confidence building -

Some good strips to visit in Yorkshire - Bagby is pretty welcoming, Breighton has some very interesting residents and visitors and then there is Fishburn.

From there north again, it is quite a gap to get to the sort of places Smithy is talking about. All worth a visit but much further, so more of a weekend away sort of trip. To Smithy's list I would add Dornoch and Lamb's Holm (and the rest of the Orkney archipelago), and Gigha.

Long trips are perfectly possible VFR, if you have plenty of time and do good planning.

IO540 is quite right I did it myself a few years back, the islands are such fun to fly VFR, unfortunaly I won't get the chance to take my light aircraft there this year but I will be disconnecting the automatics at FL100 and flying the 79ton jet into the smaller islands visualy when I can.

Anyone been across the Irish sea to Cork? Where is the best crossing point?

In a light single route down towards BCN (Brecon) and then to STU (strumble) Then direct.

Direct will take you a little away from the south coast of Ireland so pick up the land visually and work your way along the coast past Waterford to Cork.

Specatular scenery mountains and coast and usually quite a few ships to keep you happy for the crossing.

Nice restaurants in Cork too try Browns by the quays did that run 50 times in one year in a twin. Also take a trip out to Kinsale. Have fun.
Only down side is Cork is notorious for its on minima cloudbases so keep your IR currency up as I have left the UK in cavok to still find Cork with its low clouds and drizzle :rolleyes: get a good day and the country is stunning.

I am currently working out of Cork and the wind is always across the runway at 10/15 knots (and thats good weather) I can see it being a tricky one in poor vis/low cloud!!
