Can some kind person please give me the benefit of their technical experience. I have the following question which I would like an answer to:-

1. When I log into some web sites I get a small pop up message saying do you want this site to remember you every time you log on?
There is a little check box to put a tick in for yes or no.

Are the directions for this facility stored in the Registry? or somewhere in Internet Explorer? is so where ? is it possible to alter from within the Registry or Internet Explorer. Or is it possible to by-pass this facility completely so that no record is kept for any site that one visits.

However, some sites won't work if you disable cookies; you should then get a pop-up asking you if you want to enable a cookie for this instance.

Download CCleaner.com You can select the ones you want to keep, and despatch the unwanted ones.

The friend's computer I'm on had many hundreds of unwanted cookies. It took ages to rid the system of them, but now, the machine is noticeably better. And safer.

Basically, the 'site to remember you every time you log on' option, means if you tick the box you will automatically log onto that site without having to enter the passwords each time. Don't do it for things where security matters like banking. As LR says use CC cleaner to delete cookies regularily but tell it not to delete the auto-logon sites.

It's sort of handy for places like this to have IE 'remember' your password - OTOH not having to type it in frequently results in forgetting it which can be a problem if you are using a different PC, or your PC ends up having to have Windows reinstalled.

I was about to download CC Cleaner but have been slightly put off by the usual message, unknown download, can damage your computer etc etc. Is it really safe??

Yes, if you download it from the Piriform site. Should instal cleanly & quickly. As a matter of fact, you will get a similar warning every time you use CCleaner: 'Running this application will change your computer'... because it will - that's the point of running it. Change it for the better, we hope!
