I used Magderburg EDBM in 08 before going to Templehof,
Its a good GA airfield with Avgas/Mogas and a hotel nearby,

You could try Schoenhagen EDAZ. It is ~25 miles SW of Berlin. (I was there at the beginning of April)

The landing fee and parking are pretty inexpensive; very GA friendly; good size runway, although not IFR.
There is a free shuttle bus to the local train station (in a town called Trebin or Trebbin); train is ~5 Euros into Berlin.

Hi,

for german airports, use:

http://www.you-fly.com/airport/ (http://http//www.you-fly.com/airport/) (english)

or

eddh.de - Landeinformationen (http://eddh.de/info/landeinfo.html) (german)

Kind regards,
Peter

It's been a couple of years since I was there, but Dresden airport itself was reasonably priced and accommodating.

I used to live near Dresden. The city is definetly a must and beautiful. You need a full day there. make sure you visit the Church of our Lady (Frauenkirche) we has recently been rebuild.

Easy train from the airport to the city as well. I wish i could come along.

You could spend a day in here alone.

City of Dresden - Tourism - New Green Vault (http://www.dresden.de/dtg/en/sights/the_old_city/historical_green_vault/132010100000156471.php)

Building work still goes on everywhere but the city will forgive you if you speak English.

Hi,

thank you all for the helpful advise,

just two specific questions to summarize:

1) Dresden - is EDDC (main apt) good for GA? (i.e. has any of you been there within last 12 months)

2) Berlin - I assume both EDDB and EDDT are expensive for GA, is then EDCS good for Berlin? with good communication into the City?

regards,
SPTHC

Regarding Berlin, I suggest Strausberg EDAY. They have a railway station right next to the airfield, which goes directly into the city.

eday strausberg - Google Maps (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=de&geocode=&q=eday+strausberg&sll=48.765702,8.936631&sspn=0.166103,0.445633&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Strausberg,+Deutschland&ll=52.580262,13.915815&spn=0.038282,0.111408&t=h&z=14&iwloc=A)

Hello!

1) Dresden - is EDDC (main apt) good for GA? (i.e. has any of you been there within last 12 months)

Dresden airport is GA friendly as someone already wrote, there is not much traffic and there is plenty of space for parking. The landing fees are not overly expensive for a big international airport (my last visit was about two weeks ago, but not with a single, so I can't give you the figure). The German AIP (available online through Eurocontrol IIRC) should list the current fees, otherwise you could just call the GA terminal and ask (+49-351-8813270 or Flughafen Dresden - General Aviation (http://www.dresden-airport.de/en/unser_service/aviation_service/general_aviation-4.html?newLanguage=en) ). But because Dresden is a large international airport, you will be charged the usual security fees that can exceed the landing fees depending on the number of occupants. And their security check is among the most thorough in Germany (old east-German style...) so be prepared for some very annoyed passengers.
The big advantage of Dresden airport is the train station at the airport that will take you to the town centre within an hour from touchdown.

An alternative could be Bautzen (EDAB) about 40km to the east (70km by road). They have a GPS approach in case of bad weather and are very cheap and un-bureaucratic. Driving to Dresden by hired car should take less than an hour and will probably not cost you more than the landing and security fees at Dresden. Book the car in advance (the staff at the airport will certainly assist: www.flugplatz-bautzen.de (http://www.flugplatz-bautzen.de/) ) so that you don't have to wait for it.

Regarding Berlin: Both EDDT and EDDB are not GA friendly at all (PPR, too much traffic, no overnight parking, ...) since Tempelhof was forced to close. With enough planning in advance, you still might get into EDDB but certainly not cheaply. This map here (http://www.lbv.brandenburg.de/dateien/luftfahrt/Flugplatz_2009.pdf) shows all aerodromes around Berlin. I do however not have first hand experience with any of them.

German Guy and What Next,
thanks for final clarifications,
EDDC and EDAY looks like most convenient options,
