Short (UK) Training Courses

Hi folks,

I'm work for an aviation consultancy but have no formal ATC training. I'm a scientist/engineer type. My company has very generously allocated some training money for professional development. I can choose to spend this on a nice course that helps me find my inner line manager :ugh: or I can do something useful. :ok:

I'd like a technical course on ATC issues (airspace design? airport design? procedures..... anything like that). Apart from the IATA courses which are all based in the far east, or the Cranfield courses which are all in 2011 I can't find anything suitable.

Does anyone know anywhere I can get a short, good training course?

Thanks Spitoon, I have looked at the ECTL courses previously. Sadly the ones I am interested in are not UK based (Luxembourg I suppose) nor are they anyway imminent. Apparently funding has to be used sooner rather than later.

I get the feeling I'm being too specific in requirements and asking for something that doesn't exist! "101 ways to improve your communication skills for wannabe line managers" here I come :uhoh:

I think you might find that most courses of this nature are few and far between will be filled by people working for the major ATS providers who will actually use the knowledge gained in the course of their work.
Why not try the Met Office for a Met Observer Course; would that fulfil your needs?

Thanks for the response. They are indeed few and far between. Hence I have exhausted Google and trying to leech of Pprune knowledge!

But your MET tip was pretty good. That's the kind of thing I can apply for. Just need to find a similar one on airports and I'm sorted.

Hi thoughtthrough,

Would you consider an A.T.C. Assistant course in ASTAC's college in Gloucester Airport? It'll cost about £1400 for a 5 day course and that's including very nice accomodation.

You'll be mostly classroom based but you do get to visit Gloucester Airport control tower, about 1 .5 hrs on the A.T.C. simulator, and you could try and push for a helicopter ride with the Academy next door. You'll also do some Met, Nav., Altimitry, R/t, flight plans, Emergencies etc. etc.

You'll have to get in touch with Andy Cameron (no relation to Dave) to find out about the next dates!!

CAA International (http://www.caa.co.uk/docs/33/200924SRGInfoAlert.pdf) run courses at Gatwick - some of them ATC related, but probably closer to aerodrome operations.
