EDINBURGH Airport has bucked the downward trend plaguing the airline industry by reporting a surprise increase in passenger numbers.

New figures revealed a rise of ten per cent over the past 12 months despite the devastating effects of the September 11 terrorist attacks.

Holiday bookings across Scotland and the UK have been in freefall overthe past few months as tourists avoid air travel. However, management
at Edinburgh said they were pleased the airport had managed to weather the storm and insisted they were "optimistic" for 2002. The six
millionth passenger went through the airport this year.

Negotiations are set to resume shortly with Continental for a transatlantic route from the Capital after talks were shelved followingthe terror attacks.

Richard Jeffrey, managing director of Edinburgh Airport Ltd, said senior staff were working on a "15-year masterplan" to revolutionise the site. He said: "We will see the airport continuing to grow with several hundred million pounds being invested."
