Incident: United Airlines B763 over Atlantic on Apr 21st 2010, smell of smoke on board By Simon Hradecky, created Wednesday, Apr 21st 2010 11:40Z, last updated Wednesday, Apr 21st 2010 11:40Z A United Airlines Boeing 767-300, registration N657UA performing flight UA-964 from Washington Dulles,DC (USA) to Moscow Domodedovo (Russia) with 170 passengers, was enroute over the Atlantic, when the crew reported a strong smell of smoke on board and diverted to Lajes on the Azores Islands (Portugal) for a safe landing.

Hmmm, the Azores is way south of the usual track, which beggers the questions;
1) Were they on a southern track and had equipment problems, or
2) Were they on the usual track and ran into volcanic crud. In which case that is a long divert.

I'm sure we will find out.

Probably a combination of both Fle.

On a southern track to avoid the "ash" crud and ran into equipment problems. Normally, this would not get a mention, but anything regarding planes diverting for burning smell will be highlighted I should imagine.

A rumor with apparently more than a shred of truth to it. Diverted to Lajes (TER) per UA Cargo website, estimated to arrive DME at 1919 per www.unitedcargo.com (http://www.unitedcargo.com) .
