I called up Jeppesen the other day because I needed 3 charts for a leg from Fujeirah OMFJ via Luxor HELX to Syfax, DTTX. Jeppesen's solution: Trip Kit Middle East S Asia and Trip Kit EUR Med for $937US, shipping and handling included.

I just need 3 charts, but they will only sell the entire tripkit for each area.... I can't believe I need to spend that much money on charts only.

What other options do I have? Just making my flightplan and adding one waypoint after the other? (I have a G1000, but no chartview installed)

If you only want Airways charts contact AIDU and order from them. They make very good Hi and Lo Airways Charts
No1 AIDU (http://www.aidu.mod.uk/)

Page 36 of the downloadable No 1 AIDU PRODUCTS AND SERVICES CATALOGUE 2009/10 has the chart of the charts available in the Middle East.

"Civilian Customers
Most Products and Services are available to civilian customers, except Topographic Charts, and non-No 1 AIDU originated Terminal Charts. Products and Services can be purchased as a ‘once only’ order or by annual subscription."

Doesn't matter how much you are spending - they still won't get them to you in time for the flight!

@Flyingfemme:
Do you have my flightplan or how come you are this well informed? :E

@Beerdrinker
Thanks for the great hint. I didn't know about them. Seems a real alternative to Jeppesen.

One more source of charts for unusual regions is the U.S. Tactical Pilotage and Operational Navigation charts (TPC/ONC). They are not fully up to date, but for some regions they are just about the only ones available to the general public. Fugawi sells them in BSB format, you can either subscribe to online access (the Touratel series) or buy them on DVD. For example, here (http://www.fugawi.com/web/products/maps_africa_north.htm) is the entire northern half of the African continent for $100.

Not clear if these are approach plates, VFR charts, or IFR (airways) charts.

The 1st one can get from a friendly airline pilot :)

The 2nd is the U.S. ONC/TPC charts - over 10 years old now.

The 3rd would probably have to be Jepp. DAFIF used to have them but it closed to public access in 2006. I have some as PDFs; not sure about the areas. I grabbed a load before they shut down.

You can buy ONC digital charts here (http://www.aeroplanner.com/tools/dlcharts.cfm) and these run under Oziexplorer straight off.

They are no good for controlled airspace or anything else that needs to be up to date. For that you need the current IFR charts, and transcribe the CAS shapes.
