I want to install a new hull mounted antenna for the Aera 550 backup GPS, to replace our existing Trimble antenna (already hull mounted). Am I right in thinking that all hull mounted antenna are essentially the same?

The thing about the Aera is that it uses the (I forget technical name) very thin Co-ax antenna cable rather than the normal stuff with a BNC connector on. I guess I could just make up an adaptor cable to go from BNC to the (I forget technical name :) ) small external antenna connector on the Aera?

Your existing antenna will be fine for the AERA 500.

The antenna socket on the AERA 500 is MCX, so you will need to source an MCX to BNC adaptor, which unfortunately Garmin don't appear to make.

Would imagine they are readily available elsewhere however.

Are they really the same? Most handhelds use a 5V powered one with a built-in preamp. Some old hull mounted ones are just passive. I have 2 of one and 1 of the other :)

BNC to MCX is just a cable; easy to make once one knows the sex of the connectors. I can knock one up for Englishal :)
