The San Jose Mercury is reporting the plane was flown by an engineer at Tesla Motors accompanied by two fellow employees . The pilot appears to have been a local resident with commercial, multi-engine and CFI ratings. The plane came down aligned with the center-line of Beech St., which is close-in and to the left of the departure end of RWY 31. May have been attempting an emergency landing but didn't see the power lines in the fog. My condolences to the friends and families.

My understanding is that they hit powerlines in the soup.
