Lurking around here, I often see things like this (blatantly pillaged from another thread):2010/01/25 03:00 UTC
The observation is:
OLBA 250300Z 06004KT 030V090 5000 VCTS RA FEW020CB BKN026 10/06 Q1014 NOSIG

Is there a lay-person's guide to what this lot means, and if so could one of you kind folks could point me at it? I don't even know what to search for!

Google ICAO codes for airport location indicators, and METAR codes to understand the weather information.

Try this freeware:

MetarWeather - decode METAR world weather reports (http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/mweather.html)

It resolved the above METAR instantly. A cool piece of utility software, 136K as a zip.

I copy/pasted the METAR text into: File>Type METAR lines.

Runs off the .exe and does not "install".
