From Canton Ticino's main newspaper (in Italian): a DA-40 (reg HB-SDW), en-route from Lugano-Agno to Bergamo-Orio al Serio, developed engine problems, transmitted a mayday call, attempted forced landing on a field, clipped a tree and cartwheeled onto the ground. Both occupants seriously injuried.
The aircraft was reportedly fitted with a "modern turbo-diesel engine".

I see the two occupants suffered head injuries. It looks like the passenger cell did its job, so this begs the question why Diamond aircraft made in North America come with AmSafe (http://www.amsafe.com/) air-bag seatbelts, while those made in Europe don't.

From the pictures the weather doesn't look too good, low ceilings and icing maybe?
Speedy recovery to the ones involved.
