Class rating length of validity

I'm studying Air Law at the moment, the book i'm reading explains that a SEP class rating is valid for a period not exceeding 24 months.

However

I have signed up to Airquiz.com and the answer they are giving is that they are only valid for a year. I've looked at LASORS but they only seem to explain how to renew, 12 hours flying etc etc ... maybe I cant see it for looking.

Can anybody confirm how long SEP class ratings last.

My guess would be, that there is a difference between FAA and JAA rules. Hence your confusion.
But I have no idea what the FAA SEP rating validity period is, so this is just a guess.

it's the JAR i'm studying at the moment, should have mentioned that.

Early part of LASORS section F:
Validity Periods of Ratings
Under JAR-FCL, type and class ratings are valid for
one year (2 years for single-pilot, single engine class
ratings) from the date of issue, or the date of expiry if
re-validated within the validity period. (p252)

Wilky, I'm sure you were correct first time. JAR SEP rating lasts for 2 years.

The JAR SEPL is valid for 24 months from the date of issue. To be re-validated by paperwork only in the 12 month period leading up to the expiry date;

The pilot must 12 hours flying SEPL aeroplanes, of which minimums are;

6 hours PIC
1x training flight with a JAR Flight Instructor (minimum of 60 minutes undertaken as 1 flight)*
12 take-offs and 12 landings logged.

* the training flight may be replaced by any test undertaken for the issue/renewal of any JAR pilot licence/rating for any class. Should the minimum requirements be met then you may revalidate at anytime within remonths of the expiry date without loss of expiry date.


The JAR MEPL is valid for 12 months and is revalidated/renewed by a skill test only.

The word 'revalidate' means the action taken while the rating is valid and the word 'renew' means the action taken when a rating has expired.

Sorry about the mis-typing in my last post. The line in the asterisked paragraph should read '.... within 3 months of the expiry date'.

Another point that needs clarification, for it causes some confusion, is that the rating period will run from the date of test! The JAR licence period (5 years) runs from the actual date of issue of the licence.

Example;

You pass your SEPL skill test on the 2nd March 2009.
The Pilots licence is subsequently issued on the 2 April 2009.

Your SEPL rating must be revalidated by at the latest 1st March 2011 if it is not to expire.
The Pilots Licence will expire on the 1st April 2014.

So knowing all this read the exam question carefully. I hope that i've been of help.

Another point that needs clarification, for it causes some confusion, is that the rating period will run from the date of test!For a Renewal! but not for a Revalidation which runs from the expiry date of the existing rating.
