OK, this is probably going to raise some hackles and cause some lively debate but here goes!
Having been a regular viewer of this esteemed website for a number of years with occasional postings, I have noticed that in recent times (last 6 months or so) there seems to be a lot threads being posted which, at best, have a tenuous link to Mil Aviation and Aircrew (yes, I know what the forum says and that it invites the 'backroom' boys and girls etc).
I would imagine (and happy to be corrected) that most people come into this forum for information relating to "Military Aviation". It just seems to me that there is a whole plethora of posts of late that are just placed because they have some loose connection with the military. Nine times out of ten, they are posts of media articles which we all know are quite often inaccurate. This inevitably leads to debate, heated discussion and quite often descends into arguments and occasionally personal attacks. Does this not feed straight back into the hands of certain elements of the media who we know regularly read and extract snippets from these pages?
I am all for a healthy discussion and debate on a relevant topic but quite often it ends up so far left or right of field, the original topic is lost and it becomes a farce!
There are some fantastic threads in here that are informative and useful for anyone seeking the latest Mil aviation information and gossip. However, there also seems to be a growing amount of "let's all get fired up and outraged about a story that is in the papers (therefore must be true!)" threads. Would these not be more suitable in another forum. ie Jet Blast etc?
I would dare to say that although the Moderators keep an eye on the forum to make sure there is nothing illegal or damaging posted, they are not necessarily keen to move every thread otherwise they will be accused of overt censorship.
So, after all that, my question for the readership is:
Do you think the Mil Aviation forum has become too much of a general discussion and debating forum rather than an informative aviation one where the professionals who fly the non-civilian hardware, and the backroom boys and girls without whom nothing would leave the ground. can come to seek and swap relevant information?
Tin hat on, awaiting incoming!
*No smart alec answers about this being a discussion thread please, it is directly related to the forum title!
