Before this gets moved to somewhere else, I'd be interested to know what kind of damage could result from beer cans in the loo system?

They often cause the flush mechanisms to stop working. They block the toilet which can result in either unservicability or possible overflow damage.
I don't think the Captain elected to divert this flight because of the mechanical inconvenience, but because he was concerned a crime had been committed. On a domestic flight it might be more usual to wait until the aircraft had landed at it's destination. However I wasn't there, and am often sceptical of what is reported in the media, and acknowledge his absolute right to divert as he sees fit to deal with a problem.
