I am considering a trip to Sanday (Orkney islands), has anyone been that can offer any advice or hints/tips etc, places to grab some lunch....etc

I presume you have relatives or friends there? Otherwise there are a couple of B&Bs and I think a hotel - the Kettletoth or something like that. Cultural oasis however it is not!

As a destination the Orkney mainland or Lambs Holm make more sense unless its friends or family driving the destination.
