Hi - 30 minutes out of Melbourne last night, we turned left and started to divert to Canberra - for about 10 minutes, then turned back out to cross the Tasman. No word from the crew on the reason for our meandering...any ideas? The weather was clear as a bell, though we had a 160 knot tail wind.

30 minutes out implies about top of climb.

Could have been to get in to that tail wind, or an atc requirement for lateral seperation on inbound traffic, or a performance difference with other outbound traffic also climbing, or to pick up a parallel track to get the level requested etc, there are lots of reasons why.

Unless either of the pilots of or the contoller posts the actual reason, it could be anything.

You didn't 'start to divert'. Aeroplanes have to change course more than you realise. Sitting in the cabin, your perceptions are totally unreliable.

This section is for 'practical technical discussion'. There is a clue in the title.
