EI685 June 11th Wake Turbulence

Passengers from EI685 yesterday reported that they were told to fasten seat belts about 60min into the flight and then encountered brief but significant turbulence. Capt announced soon after that they had crossed close the wake of another aircraft but that the separation had been adequate for safety. Would you expect wake turbulence in mid air with normal separations?
