Mayday London 4/6/9

Hello,

Today I was flying to the south of the UK near GWC southbound, Mayday on freq from an 'Ice air?' with smoke in cockpit, we were all transferred to another freq, last we heard was something like squawk 7700, London Gatwick is in your 10 O'clock 70 miles.'

All ended well I trust, just rare to hear such an event; and something that left us hoping like anything that all would be okay. Any information?

Incident: Icelandair B752 near London on Jun 4th 2009, engine problem (http://avherald.com/h?article=41aaa9d3&opt=1)

An Icelandair Boeing 757-200, registration TF-FIJ performing flight FI-543 from Paris Charles de Gaulle (France) to Keflavik (Iceland) with 148 passengers, was enroute near London, when a loud bang was heard from the left hand engine. Shortly thereafter smoke began to fill the cabin. The crew shut down the engine, declared emergency and diverted to London Gatwick, where the airplane landed safely on runway 26L.

TF-FIJ is a 1991 vintage aircraft with approx 80000 TT and over 20000 cycles,
this incident just shows that age and usage is having its effect on Icelandairs
fleet. Few sched airlines use 18 year old a/c as heavily for a 4 leg a day and
4800 hrs/year operation.

Can I just say how refreshing it is to read a perfect write-up about the incident. No "heroic pilots struggling with controls" or "narrowly avoiding a school or village". Just the facts, the 5 Ws, and move on.
