The 10th aniversary of my first solo is coming up in a couple of months and having celebrated not much else in my time flying I want to celebrate this.

I've got a couple of ideas, but i thought i'd throw it open to the minds of Proon to see what would turn up.

Only stipulations - I want to be doing the flying and the budget is around $1000.00.

So what are you thinking? What would you do?

$1000 would give you two or three hours doing aeros (not in a jet fighter), you never know you might like it and want to continue on. Either way it will enhance your flying skills!:ok:

What did you solo in and where?? Wander back there and take your old instructor up for an hour or so in the same old bird. That should almost blow the grand with a little left for a carton. Well done, have fun for the next ten.:ok:

I must be showing my age...A celebration in my time meant shouting the bar. Funnily enough $1000 was the budget then too.

I cant see how a celebration can stipulate you doing the flying! Mans you cant have a drink, Let's see $1000 sould be able to get you 30 slabs of XXXX, so I suggest 28 slabs and a real cheap dancer ^^ , and I mean REAL cheap! :ok:

Why not jump out of a 'perfectly good aeroplane' and spend the rest on booze!:E

That mile high thread shut down yesterday mentioned a bloke who had set himself up in business. There was a gleek plick at Essendon with a PA31 a few years ago whose business card made it plain the clientele he wanted to attract.
Claimed the pilot would pull about 4 G if asked to.

If you fly commercially, spend $1000 on loss of licence insurance.

Congratulations - most boring answer so far.

Buy $900 worth of booze and $100 worth of food and get the crew around. The FEWER, the better.

Do a seaplane rating, or get tailwheel time .. (even if you never use them again.. just another little celebration of variety)

I just checked and I am up for 33 yrs in a little over a month. We used to celebrate hours, particularly 10,000 & 20,000 and so on, doesnt seem to happen any more.
I have been lucky enough to fly a few different warbirds, jets (Mig) and prop, (T28 T6 ++) however the most enjoyable memories I have were playing around, in a Tiger. If I was going to spend $1000 I would do an hour or two in one of them and have a BBQ with some mates and a few beers. A "stripper" wouldn't go astray either.

Josh Cox
11th Apr 2010, 23:08
Ren,

Different economy for you, you'd definately be able to get a "cheap stripper" in Darwin for way less than two cartons, perhaps a carton of goon or "lady in the bottle" ?.

Dave, don't waste the fun tokens on flying, a boozy boat trip, boozy winery tour, boozy arvo with the family down the local, a boozy fishing/hunting trip with the boys, I'm certain you can see the pattern here........:}

I am coming up on 40 years in July.

I am planning on a nice dinner party at a nice retrauant. I will invite my family, some close friends and anyone I can think of who has helped me, mentored me or encouraged me in my aviation career.

I will also bring some photos of some of the good times I have had, some of the places I have been, some of the people I have met, and some of the planes I have flown. I will probably tell ome stories, and I am sure those attending will tell some too.

It am hoping we all have a very good time.

Sadly, some of my best flying friends are no longer with us. So there will be a toast to them too.

Then.... On to Oshkosh for the EAA convention and another 40 years of flying fun.

A different way to spend the cash and celebrate??..... assuming you're commercially rated and working in the industry.

1. A bag of heroin
2. A willing sheep
3. A copy of Bad Boy Bubby playing on the big screen
4. A room at the Old Crest Hotel in the X.

Combine the above elements with a web cam and share with your flying mates!
Worked a treat in the service!:E

Put on a keg at the Aero Club when I passed the 1,000 hours, and tried to encourage others to make it a tradition. Passed the 40th Commercial year last year, so at the Club barbeque bought a few rounds. Only one other member from those Victa/Piper/Cessna times still in the club. She has over 500 hours now..but is a grandmother.. Maybe I wont be around if she gets to 1,000..

Ahhhh . .. . . how did the old Roger Bacon put it, FB? 'The sweet nostalgia of the never to be forgotten moment'?

You just have to admire those lovely lines that DH with his inspired pen first lofted. No matter what a recent droll post said about adverse yaw or ailerons rigged arse about. Just as a rose is a rose, so is a classic a classic. (Just warming up for the gathering of Antiquers at Griffith in ten days.)
