No long term car park at Brize?

I have recently read in SROs (yes, I'm a sad g"t that reads them) that there is no longer a long term car park at Brize. Is this a short term measure or a permanent arrangement?

Considering that Brize is the main airhead for all Brit military personnel departing on deployment/exercise, a lack of a long term car park seems somewhat short sighted, maybe even criminal?

Or did the long term car park have to go to make room for the Hercs from Lyneham/A-400M/FSTA*

It's not really criminal is it? I've deployed several times in the last couple of years through Brize... MT dropped me off most times, and the Mrs picked me up the other couple of times on R+R. Is there really an occasion where MT won't transport you? You'll in all probability have a weapon after all, so you'd surely need MT or at least a hire car?
Brize only has a certain sized car park... they can't work miracles with the numbers of troops they deal with these days. I do sympathise with them.

Duty of care really. If you have flown back to the UK, you have been on Duty all that time. You were probably up early, waiting around in less than relaxing facilities, flown home and then step out of the terminal at Brize. I'm guessing you would be breaking drivers hours by quite some margin. Your unit should be moving you and taking proper care of you. Anything less is illegal.

Perhaps the titty-merchants want to get outraged about this too :hmm:

Every flying station I have ever been on has had a long term car park, the place to leave your car if you were away for more than 24hrs, for such contingencies as the station calling an exercise, etc.

The fact that most other stations have a long term car park, but one which is actually a departure point for large numbers of people apparently no longer has, was a comparison I was trying to highlight.

You can't compare the Station Exercise scenario with a Sqn or Regiment deploying for 6 months. There is only a certain amount of real estate and yes it has been put to better use. As one poster has already said most units and individuals use MT to arrive for their flights as many are carrying personal weapons or are departing in large groups. If you don't like the decision then I suggest you write to the Station Commander and tell him why you think it is a bad idea.

Parking at Brize is a joke at the moment. With the shutting of the long term carpark the already inadequate parking has people abandoning cars all over the place. Should be fun with another 1000 people coming from Lyneham. Wonder if anyone thought about that when "project whatever its called this week" was thought up.

I was asking about a long term car park at Brize, for use by everyone, Brize personnel or people passing through, not a specific car park for people going OOA.... Part of my point is that there is likely to be more demand for a long term car park at a major departure point.

I have done my fair share of time in sandy places since 2001, often with less than adequate kit, but not in as much danger as the average front line soldier.

If you disagree with my post I suggest you might say so in a slightly more polite manor.

As for growing up, what is the saying, growing old is mandatory, growing up is optional....:O

Agree with MM that car parking at Brize is a pain at present. With all the building and road works parking is at a premium.

Apparently the CO has plans for colour coded car parks/passes (which presumably everyone will ignore) and also to reduce the large number of hire cars currently 'stored' in the Air Terminal Car park. The latter at least should free up around 250 spaces.

so thats one colour for harry staish and the "senior management" park wherever you like as close as possible to where you are going, (mustn't wear out those expensive shoes or allow you to get wet), one colour for aircrew allows you to park within 15M of anywhere you are going (can't have them walking too far), one colour for any other ranks allowing you to park anywhere you like so long as it is off base and finally one colour for visitors allows you to park in the car park furthest from where you want to go :D

Seemed like a reasonable question to me. Not life or death, but a legitimate enquiry.
For my 2 pence worth, I don't think failure to provide long term parking constitutes illegality and I suspect the decision resulted from irresistible real estate pressures.
The previous point about returning personnel being best served by MT or their spouse rather than driving themselves home is well made. I almost killed myself 20 odd years ago driving home after a 16hr flight from the FI.
