A Boeing 737-900 Lion Air jet skidded on the runway after landing at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport on Monday, but no passengers were injured, Antara reports.

Airport administrator Edwar Silloy said the incident took place at 3:43 p.m, and officers were evacuating passengers to the airport.

The jetliner had taken off from Makassar, South Sulawesi, at 2:30 p.m. local time, carrying 168 passengers, and had landed in bad weather marked by heavy rain.
The airport authorities have closed the southern runway until midnight, to accelerate the evacuation process.

The Transportation Ministry was discussing with the National Transportation Safety Committe (KNKT) over Boeing 737-900's skidding at the Soekarno-Hatta airport in Tangerang on Monday.

According to state news agency Antara, the Director General of the Air Transport Herry Bhakti was leading the closed meeting that was also attended by representatives from Lion Air and officers from the airport.

“We hold the meeting to find the causes of the accident,” head of the airport administrator office EA Silooy said.

Previously, the KNKT's chairman Tatang Kurniadi said that the committee had categorized the skidding as an accident following structural damages of the airplane.

“The KNKT have dispatched four investigators --- Frans Wenas, Tumenggung, Nurcahyo and Sulaiman --- to collect data and do some preliminary investigations to the location,” he said.

Both the Jakarta Globe (English Language) and the Media Indonesia (Bahasa Indonesian Language) newspapers running the same photo of the MD-90 on the runway. The photo shows PK-LIL off the runway.

Local news are showing live video of passenger evacuation - passenger on board using mobile telephone for video capture. From the footage, it shows at least 30% of the passengers bringing their carry-on bags off the plane. :ugh: Even better is the picture of the flight attendents running ahead of the passengers to safety :ugh: - clearly not waiting to ensure pax safely off the plane.

In the footage, there is significant rain, with reduced visbaility and standing water on the active runway from which the plane departed. Nose gear looks to be down but heavily damaged.

From news timing could not be worse - second aviation incident for Lion Air (24 Feb 2009 - no front landing gear) in as many weeks - just as the Indonesian CAA was petitioning for access to Europe - looks like that may be delayed. :=

Just when I thought that they purposely crashed the MD80, they prove me wrong with a 737-900 also going down.

If I am not mistaken, Lionair was the launch customer for the 900 series, and has the largest order for the type..

If I am not mistaken, Lionair was the launch customer for the 900 series, and has the largest order for the type.. Like a response from Microsoft support, your answer is technically correct...:)

However, AS was the offical launch customer of the 900 back in 1995. Just to pick nits, Lion Air was the first customer for the 737-900ER (Extended Range), with an order for 30 aeroplanes. That was circa 2005. :8

If you need to get around in Indonesia, there isn't much choice. The other airlines are probably the same. Indonesia is as big as Europe and due to the geography, flying is the only practical way to travel.
