I have a 30 mile drive to the nearest airfield, which can take up to an hour. This makes flying somewhere for a day out a real hassle.

How hard is it to set up a farm strip? Is it just a case of befriending a farmer who has suitable field, and asking to land in it when they're not using it, or does it need to be registered?

I live in a very agricultural area, and there are loads of empty fields very near my house which look suitable.

Regular question on pprune. Do a search. You could start here

There is also a book - can't recall the title.

The book you mention is called "Country Flying" by Geoff Farr.
Well worth searching out.

Yep, that's about it, and no need to register anywhere. Except ...... Finding such a farmer isn't easy! There's a few simple rules which you'll find when you trawl the archives, but it really isn't "that" hard to set up a farm strip :D
