Evening Captain,

Just wanted your advice on renewing my SEP rating.I got my licence in the UK and now the time is approaching to start completing the 12 hour+ minimum in 12 months. Is it possible to do my 12 hours outside the UK and have my licence renewed? For instance, going to the US getting signed off then sending the details to the CAA? Any advice on the cheapest ways to get the hours completed are always welcome.

Cheers :ok:

SS.

If your SEP (land) Class rating hasn't expired, then you are looking at a RE-VALIDATION and NOT a renewal :)

To revalidate, on the basis of experience, you need to have flown 12 hours in the 12 months prior to re-validation of which ONE must be with an instructor.

These hours don't have to be flown in the UK or even in a 'G' registered aeroplane. They just need to have been flown in an aeroplane which fits within the definition of the JAA SEP (land) class. The hour dual DOES need to be flown with a JAA instructor though.

Once you've met all the requirements, you get an examiner to sign your Certificate of Experience. This MUST be done before expiry of your rating.

There is also a form to send off to the CAA.

If you can find a JAA instructor / examiner abroad, then you're ok! :D

Remember you can also revalidate by passing a skills test with an examiner. That eliminates the need to do the 12 hours.

what I try and do is to do the 1 hr with an examiner - so I have met all the experience requirements then fly for 1 hr with the examiner acting as FI. It is no skills test, and then he / she can sign the paperwork straight away. There are a few JAA examiners in the USA at various places (don't ask me where though...)

I believe you could get what you want more quickly and probably cheaper at a JAA FTO in Florida.
However, make sure they give you a written quote for the course cost and watch out for the false exchange rates, fuel surcharges and other tricks.
Also, you would have to pay for your travel and accommodation.
