It seems there has been a rethink on flap design in recent years. Taking the 737 as an example, they went from 3 section units with it seems much more rearward travel at small flap settings before deflecting down. The NG flaps seem to have far less fowler action at take of flap settings and much more downward travel. As well as 2 section design.
Is there any benefit, the NG would seem to add more drag than the classic at take-off settings. There must be a weight/complexity saving. Is there iny difference in the CL between the two?
