General question..

As a potential recruit, I'm doing my best to prepare for any maths questions that are thrown my way in the selection process and I'm just wondering if it is acceptable to use the same rule of thumb as pilots do for descent i.e.

3 x height/5 x groundspeed

or do we need to be a bit more scientific in our calculations?!
