Gentleman of KAL, or ex KAL, Good day to all.

Ive been offered interview on both Korean Air and Qatar Airways on these coming months. My question is (obvoiusly, incase I make it)..which one?
Before giving me your advices, consider the following:
F/O, early 30s, single, with over 3000 hours,

In KAL Im offered the 737. 11 days off a month anywhere in the world. No chance for upgrade ever, life in Korea would be purely focused on work, very strict SOPs, no social life, etc.

In QR most probably the 777. but im not looking in staying there for ever either.

Money wise comes out to the same after computing everything. Im simply looking for the most favourable and enjoyable experience.

Advice from Expats greatly appreciated..

Thanks to all.

Jumpdrive, I think I smell sour grapes...
If you want to commute KAL is simply the best deal around. From MY OWN experience as a KAL captain (B744) for almost 8 years, the info bluefalcon has is basically correct. Very little social life indeed, at least with the locals. Good, reliable airline, training is intense but getting better. It has improved a lot since I joined.
Good luck!

Korean girls are considered by many to be amongst the most beautifull in the world - nobody has ever seen a Qatari woman....

Dear Blue Falcon:

Sam Adams is right. Best commuting contract for a Expat by far. Social Life? Not so much. You won't have to worry about that though because you'll be flying your backside off.

If you've not worked in the Orient before, don't start at KAL. The culture is hardcore and very hard on Westerners. Search the forum on all that.

Go to the desert.

Blue Falcon:

you have received a lot of response to this question on the Middle East forum as well. I don't think it takes a very educated man to see the light here.

also you mentioned,
"Im simply looking for the most favourable and enjoyable experience".

if thats the case, stop looking at QA for something favorable and enjoyable, both do not exist here.
times that by 100 for F/O's.

A few Korean F/O's have moved to QATAR. However I am unaware of any reverse flow

recently we have had quite a few Capts leave QA for KAL, and seen some North American Capt leave KAL for QA ( tax reasons I believe ).

not to mention a few local Asiana F/O's joined QA a while back ( union problems I believe), nearly all have left.

QA is a revolving door, type rating factory, no one survives very long out here.

We have had a lot of Korean 330 FO come to EY.

I'm just reading a book called Outliers......interesting read. Chapter on Korean and the power distance, accident history

Even with the issues at Qatar, I'd take the lessor of the two and go to the desert. Korean is no place for an FO, never has been.

Good luck

Yes, I confirm there will be a few ``advantages ``in QR. And you`ll be on 777!!!
