Hey folks,

can anyone comment on the job market in Canada at the moment? I am considering a possible move to the West Coast or Alberta (in 6 months). I have a JAA ATPL with 1000hrs turbo prop (over 10 Tonnes), 2000 hrs total and hopefully some command time soon.

what is involved in converting to a Canadian Licence.

The job market has slowed down dramatically over the last few months. None of the airlines are hiring, although I belive Westjet is supposed to add more airplanes to its fleet. This has led to little or no movement in the rest of the industry although the odd turboprop and corporate job seem to keep popping up. As for Alberta, everyone is waiting to see where the oilprices are headed, because if the stay below $55 for long it might force many of the oil sands developers to rethink their immediate plans. That would impact aviation out there.

It's a real sad state of affairs when the LOW price of oil adversly affects aviation.

I'm afraid the comments about the job market are correct. That said, it is possible to find work, but not easy. I'm in the market myself for a new job and have witnessed a remarkably rapid change between Sept. and now.

I believe that getting a Canadian licence would require you to take the applicable exams for the commercial and ATPL and of course you'd be credited flight time, and possibly some of your writtten exams as well.

is the link to the online Canadian Aviation Regulations, section IV and the Standards 421 will probably answer your questions.

And, of course, at the end of the day you'll have to have a work permit, and I doubt you'd find employment sponsorship if that is required.

It also depends on what your looking for and your experience of course.

Canada is an awesome country to move to and I'm planning on it myself. You could just wait until the job market swings around again, you may be able to gain residency without a firm job offer too. However this relies on your financial resources.

To the Canadians here. Guys, is there a demand for instructors? What about NWT/Inuvik?

To the OP: Personally though I've looked at the recent job market and I'll put it like this. I'm looking at leaving aviation to move there. Hope this helps.

Hey i'm from the UK too, qualified instructor with permanent resident status, and i serve tables! no instructor jobs here in Calgary for the foreseeable. I hear the situation is bad elsewhere too. Not the time for a job in aviation.
