Shrink-Wrap wraps around landing gear!

I was speaking to a colleague of mine who works at Dub airport. He told me of a story (to which he had limited knowledge).
The freight airline DHL at Dublin are suposed to shrink wrap all their cargo in their warehouses far away from the ramp area. But some smartarse decided to bring a role of shrink wrap out onto the ramp to shrink wrap some freight that was missed in the warehouse.
However the role of plastic wrap was left on the ramp and some time later a plane (not sure what airline) taxied over the shrink wrap and got it all wrapped around the wheels (again unsure which wheel). Unknown to the flight crew the plane proceeded to take off, the shrink wrap was seen trailing some distance behind the plane as it became airborne. This is all the information I have on the incident .. if anybody can add to the story or correct me if I am incorrect anywhere please do.

But I do know the IAA had an investigation into the incident and a member of DHL staff was sacked on the spot when it became clear who was at fault.

Sounds to me like a lot of people weren't doing their jobs which should include looking for FODs on the ramp (AND doing something about anything found).

Yes, the guy was an idiot for bringing something like that out. And even more of an idiot for leaving it behind. But probably not the only idiot - a lot of people must have seen that roll before the incident.

It is time to start thinking about it. I've seen a lot of people with a rather relaxed (to avoid using a few more colourful terms) attitude about FOD and FOD walkdowns. If that doesn't change, things like this will continue happening.

It happens everywhere....last year I picked up just such a roll from the car park at STN - not airside, but alongside the airside fence; but just look around any freight area...lucky that the one at Dub didn't go down an intake;I wonder how many cargo loaders, vehicle drivers and others are aware of the ability of a jet engine to hoover up anything in front of it? It even surprises some engineers, like the one at Hatfield a few years ago who got swallowed by a 146 - they ain't exactly powerful, just imagine what a 747 donk could do! :eek:

it is the reponsibility of everyone airside to report/pick up fod and ensure that they don't contribute to further fod. however obviously doesn't apply to many crew members and ground staff. whilst on t/round in agp a few weeks back, the c/crew on the a/c parked next to us dumped 3 gash bags by the stairs. within seconds and prior to the young girl reaching the top of the stairs, the bags and contents were scattered across the apron by the jet blast of a taxying 757. the young lady concerned turned shrugged her shoulders as oblivious to anything. have also seen old newspappers dumped, and consequently blown away. caterers re-catering our a/c in man sometime back managed to drop a handful of meal sets off the truck. no attempt made to climb down and pick up. all a hazard to aviation from actual intake, and to attracting birds.

Manchester is getting really bad for FOD. The service area under terminal one is full of rubbish and this is now starting to encroach on the stands. Have they no pride?

All comments noted and agreed.....but come and have a look at CDG or FCO. Brings a new meaning to the term FOD...!?

Consistently working on the problem, but the words head and brick wall spring immediately to mind....
