ICAO English minima !!!

hello all captains here, i am Hany from Egypt, 21 years old.just graduated from Egyptian Aviation Academy ( EAA ) Air Traffic Control and academic studies session.i am not yet a real ATC but i will ISA(by the God willing) soon.i did hear alot about ICAO English test before joining the real ATC field.i am taking now English courses to improve my language to pass that test.but really i don't know it's minima, how can i evaluate my self to ensure that i will pass?please i need some advices from such an experienced person like every body of you.how can i evaluate my English ?how can i improve my language better and better ?what are the most important subjects for the new ATC to have before joining the real life ? ( Aerodromes - Rules of the air -.... etc. )Thanks alot for reading even u don't know how to help :O

If you can watch a movie in english without any subtitles and understand every word, then tell a friend about that movie in english you are pretty close to a 6.

I made the english exams and I have a level 6 which is mostly about understand what is being said to you and to tell that to someone else correctly.

Regarding ATC, know what you need to know, always be prepared for an emergency or something abnormal to happen. If we (pilots) need help, we will ask for it.

NO shortcuts when we are high. Calculate with that we can descend about 300 ft per Nm at low altitude (Below FL100) and not often reduce speed while we are descending.

I am an examiner for an ICAO compliant aviation English test. The exam board that I test for would probably not thank me for posting the exact link here, but if you google "aviation english test examples", you should get a link to their site somewhere near the top of the list (PM me if you need more guidance). It has some examples of their test structure.

The exact test and format varies depending on the country you take the test in, and who you are working for. I'm afriad I don't know who is doing it in Egypt.

The idea of operational level 4 is that you can communicate any idea that is required of you. It is not a problem if you don't know the precise word in every instance, or if you make gammatical errors. The point about level 4 is that you can let people know what you need to tell them, and you can understand them (even if that requires you to confirm what they have said e.g. "did you mean ... I should descend to flight level 220 or descend to flight level 200").

Remember that even native speakers (me included) do not get it right 100% of the time.

i am really don't know how to thanks you,
that is really a very useful information.

i am now can watch an American movie without any subtitles and get at least 80% from the hole conversation in it, Does it considered good level or not?
and how can i test my English every day to see if i really gained any improvements or not ?

also which do you think is more important for the Controller: to listen and understand well ? or to talk well in a very good manner ?
