Pilots are being invited to land their planes free of charge at the launch of a groundbreaking aircraft registration scheme this Sunday (September 14th).

The fly-in takes place at Shoreham Airport between 10am and 3pm to launch the ‘Vapours’ scheme, a crime reduction initiative headed by Sussex Police aimed specifically at aviation.

Attendees will be able to:

- Security mark their equipment with the SelectaDNA forensic property marking system.
- Register their ground contacts in case of any emergency.
- Speak with specialist officers from Sussex Police about staying legal when they’re flying.
- Talk with staff from scheme partners 50 North Ltd, who have authored specialist software for the aviation community.
- Discover the online suspicious incident reporting facility.
- Sign up to regular newsletters.

DC Andy Huggett, Sussex Police, said: “My colleague Steve Lowin and I have formed the General Aviation Intelligence Team. We’re based at Shoreham Airport and empathise with the needs of the flying community.

“We hope aircraft owners will take the opportunity to security mark their equipment completely free of charge. It’s also a chance for us to engage with them and explain innovations such as the online reporting facility and emergency ground contact registration scheme.

“Essentially, we are treating the whole of Sussex as an airfield, with its community being the pilots and airfield operators. With Vapours we’re giving this community the tools to police themselves. If you like, it could be seen as a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme for the sky. We hope that, if we can make it a success in Sussex, in the long term we’ll be able to roll it out across the UK.”

Pilots and aircraft owners are welcome to attend the event with or without aircraft as they will still be able to register on the scheme, and arrangements can be made to mark their aircraft equipment at a later date.

Anyone who’d like to book a free landing slot should call the Vapours Launch booking line on 07976 294 996. The landing fee on the day will be waived for visiting pilots, but please note that prior permission is still required.

Is the event only for the good people of Sussex or can we all join in?

Rod, I imagine it is open to all as the offer of a free landing wouldn't really apply to residents would it. Where ever you are come down and take advantage of this.

A superb inititive and hats off to the people behind it.

I have stuck this thread so hopefully more people will get to see it. (Can I come and have a go in your helicopter?) :)

I went there in ‘WK, along with two other aircraft from the farm. There were a few folks from other strips and even people from East Kent. Amazing what a freebie landing will do. That said, Shoreham wasn’t exactly over run with aircraft heading for the event.

The two main police officers running the project were there, along with the guy from 50 North, the software / systems / web design company doing the Internet side of things. There was also someone doing the equipment marking job as well. They were saying the same things that were in the letter and on the various forums. I gather that one of the officers and his wife had a busy weekend recently stuffing all the envelopes.

On balance I think it’s a good thing, even if it’s only that we have some police officers that are enthusiastic about general aviation.

Safe Flying,
Richard W.

BRL asks:- "Did anyone go?" (Where's the quote button gone? :* )

Sure did. Very worthwhile. Good luck to all of them. May their initiative and enthusiasm be rewarded :D
