Qantas likely to merge

Wednesday, August 27, 2008

Qantas should merge with another major carrier in the near future, according to outgoing Chief Executive, Geoff Dixon.

Speaking to ABC Radio on the weekend, Mr Dixon has supported a merger with another major airline saying that it would not be different to what existed now.
However, industry officials are already casting doubt on the plan, citing the Qantas Sales Act which stipulates that no foreign airline can own more than 25 per cent of the carrier, and no group of airlines can acquire more than 35 per cent, leaving total foreign ownership at a maximum 49 per cent.
Australia’s national carrier would also have to convince politicians that the merger would be the best move for the interests of the country, after earlier government efforts to join the flying kangaroo with Singapore Airlines failed.
Despite the difficulties, Mr Dixon remained insistent a merger would be on the cards.
"Qantas would always be Australian and would always have the great majority of its jobs and its business in Australia," Mr Dixon said.

"But there has to be a level of maturity when it comes to a discussion on this”
"Other airlines are starting to merge and we must be part of that.”
"It doesn't mean the kangaroo will go. It doesn't mean the brand will go. It will be probably very similar to what it is now. People have got to understand that this will happen."

Maybe CX could buy QF and I could finally get that 777 command slot in Mel.

( the 777's they are once again rumoured to be ordering )

What double standards?

"Qantas would always be Australian and would always have the great majority of its jobs and its business in Australia," Mr Dixon said.
I wonder what his definition of 'Majority' is?
Or will it be the majority of Qantas jobs in Australia will be held by Australians?
"But there has to be a level of maturity when it comes to a discussion on this”
..Is that a watered down version of 'you would have to have a mental illness not to accept this take over offer'....
"It doesn't mean the kangaroo will go. It doesn't mean the brand will go. It will be probably very similar to what it is now. People have got to understand that this will happen."
Probably???????
People have got to understand this will happen.....or do people have to understand this is what Darth wants...

I thought it was obvious! QF will merge with JETSTAR in the next few years.... all on JQ terms and conditions.

Regretfully with $35 Billion in aircraft orders, there are any number of 'predators' who know what that can mean and will snap up the Roo if & when the price is right.

As the departing CEO knows, best defence Qantas has is to cosy up to a new partner. Provided of course, whoever it is the Roo wants to marry can win over all who understand that Australia, Qantas, Staff, and many associated with aviation would now be seriously financially troubled, had the APA Qantas Takeover Bid succeeded.

Unfortunately not much evidence yet that those responsible for the Roo's well being have learned from history.

After the snow job that was the spin put by Darth and his apprentice Maggie about the take over you would have to take anything said by Darth with a grain of salt....

The company has just made another record profit in difficult times and with other airlines folding yet.....doom and gloom again and the only way to fix it is to sell....sorry..I mean merge..sorry slip of the tongue there.

Thankfully the sale act was enacted and wisely so....

What can he possibly gain by saying that as he goes out the door? Where is he going next? To figure into the next merger?

He's not done yet!

He cracks me up! Just like the politician telling everyone that the tollroad will cease being a tollroad when it's paid off. What does Dixon care? He's floating into the sunset under a skyful of platinum parachutes...unless he already has something lined up with the potential partnering airline!

Ok Wally Qantas is floundering with its staff. Is that right? Now Wally do you realise or understand how stupid that sounds.:D

So two years ago Mr. Dixon was trying to privatise the airline and now he says it needs to merge with another carrier??????????????????????????????????????

This just doesn't f***ing compute!

Exactly what is he trying to maximise, long term shareholder value? I don't think so at all. I think he is trying to pump some life into the short term share price by suggesting that QF is "in play" as a merger target.

The closest sort of amalgamation with Jetstar would be an attempt to rebrand J* as Qantas.

I had this nightmare that he then took over Telstra. Hugging Ziggy and with that strange smile, my heart sank, as I realised that it is not over. My phone, my mobile, my broadband, now under his control. I woke up sobbing, and the missus got into me declaring I am never to drink port before retiring again. J#sus it was terrible!

Could you imagine if he was running an Oil company...We would all be paying $5.00 per litre and he would be charging us extra for using a credit card.

He would also be bringing in overseas workers on 457 visa's to work in the depot's and stations....and telling us how lucky we are

You forgot the most important bit......

He would also be telling us that the oil company was running out of oil and was about to go broke, were it not for his superlative skills as a manager....while making billion dollar profits at the same time.

Dixon wouldn't be trying to bump up the share price so as to get the numbers over the line prior to the executive share bonus in November would he?
What was that magic number again? $3.64 or there abouts?

Maybe the old fashioned British Commonwealth airline? BA + Qantas + Tasman Empire Airlines. Operating Flying Boats.

Why would Qantas want to tie up management time trying to control a US carrier? They could ask the folks at BA how much fun it was having a non-controlling stake in US Air.
