View Full Version : Flight Safety Audit Checklist

I am a fairly inexperienced FSO working for Aerial work helicopter company that does Firefighting, police and ambulance service.

In trying to make a checklist/questionnaire to help me audit the company bases, and working personnel (Crew, maintenance, etc..).

I would appreciate advice and help on how perform this kind of audit and examples of checklists or questionnaires.

I got some info on Appendice D of http://www.aigaviation.com/doc/GAIN%20-%20Flight%20Safety%20Handbook.pdf but it is to much airliner related.

Hi Zbit - you might find it useful to logon to the IATA website/audits etc. I have just completed an IOSA course. Not sure about helicopters but its definitely worth a look in that area. Good luck.;)

Hi there,

I conduct IOSA audits and don't think that such a checklist will really be applicable to your type of operation. It's very, very airline specific, and will drive you to drink! The format is however, excellent.

What may be useful however, are the (CAA / Transport Canada / FAA, etc) regulatory audit type checklists. These cover country specific regulatory compliance, and are pretty comprehansive. I'm sure the respective authority will be happy to help with this info.

Shell, BP, TEXCO, etc... (the big Offshore guys) have very good audit divisions, and may be willing to share their checklits. That may be worth trying.

You are right Pitch&Fan (http://www.pprune.org/members/179350-pitch-and-fan), the IOSA was a good try but like you said it is to much airliner. I will try to get some contact or web site of the authorities that you indicate.

I hope I am not teaching granny to suck eggs here, but all the checklists that you download are not a lot of use to you. They may give you some ideas but you must not lose sight of the fact that auditing a base is for the purpose of ensuring that they are operating to the company procedures as laid out in your manuals. Therefore your starting point is the manuals and you should prepare an audit guide from them.

In my time as an auditor, I found that checklists were helpful but too restrictive if followed too assiduously. You need the ability to follow a trail to get the best from an audit.

Checklists from the CAA or similar are fine if you are auditing the manuals to determine that the manuals comply with regulations, but the checklists for that purpose need to be updated for each audit of the manual.

Thanks Paradism. You are right of course, but the intention is to have a starting point and to learn also from the experience from different persons, operators and Safety related organizations.

Hi guys,

I know this is years later after this post was made but I am also in such a situation.

I am a pilot but my company has inducted me into carrying out some quality assessment stuff which means I have to carry out audits for almost every operation of the company, i.e internal audits for management, operations, outstation bases, airstrip audits etc. I have nil ideas about where to start and I was wondering if anyone might have something of reference I can use to make these checklists because I want to make something that can be used later on even in coming years. I have tried to make checklists using the IOSA manual but it is so complicated and is meant for bigger airlines but our company has only 6 aircraft and not much to audit.

Anyone have any idea of anything? I have tried the above links but it seems they have expired with time
