SFO Plane Lands Safely After Mechanical Glitch

SAN FRANCISCO (BCN) ― San Mateo County fire units responded to the San Francisco International Airport Tuesday afternoon after an incoming flight from Hong Kong reported hydraulic problems, authorities said.

Cathay Pacific Airways flight No. 872, a Boeing 747 aircraft, reported having hydraulic problems around 1:15 p.m., said airport spokesman Mike McCarron.

The plane landed at SFO safely at about 2:05 p.m., according to McCarron.

Possibly lost a hydraulic system. They might even have been down to their last three! Emergency services always respond to a plane with any sort of mechanical failure. Another complete non-event probably that increasingly gets into the public domain.

Sounds like the dreaded seven engine landing with a B-52. ;)

Sounds like the dreaded seven engine landing with a B-52.

Is that better or worse than the nine engine landing in a B36?

The B-36 was not usually landed with the jets operating, as they burned avgas, and at the end of a 40 hour long range mission (yes, some were this long, some slightly longer, the record, as I recall was 50 hours) not much fuel was left in tanks...however, according to my neighbor, who flew these quite remarkable airplanes for eight years, at least one piston engine could be expected to have had ahhh...'problems', and be shut down.
If this thread is moved to the nostalgia section, I will tell you why.

Aren't those engines supposed to be reliable?

The R-4360 reliable? No.

Sounds like the dreaded seven engine landing with a B-52.

Nothing compared to an 11 engine water landing in the Dornier.
