I've just fitted a CD Rewriter in my machine (Make is LG No GCE-8160B).I've set it up as master with orignal CD Rom as slave, works ok unless media Player 7.1 is started and then it immediatly freezes the computer and I have to reboot, I am using Windows 98 second edition, have 128 ram, if you have any ideas people I would be very grateful otherwise I will have to return it to shop. cheers Victor . .

The Windows Media Player is known for a bug in it's encoding...does not appear to happen with all CD players. . .Even CNET reports this here . Download another software and only if this also shows the same problem than consider your new toy as being faulty. . .On the link provided you find links to other acceptable software.

Thanks for the info folks, both cd rom and cdrw are on the secondary IDE, I have tried master/slave and vice versa, also set it up on the hard drive as slave no different, have just unpluged the cd rom and there are no problems, it only crashes if both cds are connected and just to make it more odd, by trying the cdrw on its own it proves that the cdrw is not at fault. Heellllp.. .

Ummm....didn't think you could make the Hard disk a slave (well the c: drive anyway)

Have you tried the following:

IDE1 : hard disk master, CDROM as slave. .IDE2: CDRW as master as single device on that channel?

FS

Sorry Flyswift, Its the way I worded it,I didnt mean the hard disc as slave I meant the CDRW as slave and the hard disc as master on IDE1.. .I've tried the hard disc master and CDRW as slave but not the CDROM as slave to the hard disc on IDE1, I will give it a go. . .Cheers I will let you know. . . . .Blimey I'm confusing myself now.

Heres an interesting angle on it for you.. .I had a similar problem whenever I wanted to burn CD's the system would crash halfway rendering the CD unusable.. .I spent a fortune in CD's trying to rectify the problem.. .I reloaded windows, Refromated then reloaded windows, uninstalled then reinstalled the CD on its own and nothing worked. Then finally I removed the memory sticks and replaced them. Problem solved.. .Go figure.

Well people,. .I'm afraid it's beaten me, tried everything you advised except changing the memory, no joy so have taken it back to retailer, perhaps I will try again with another make.. .Thanks again for trying, Victor
