I was about to ask the author what "Braking" has to do with "taking off". Typically the two activities are kept separate.

B747-200 Normal Brakes on 4 or 1 system and reserve brakes on 2 system......never heard of complete brake failure before! Heard of the Park Brake not applied? As for 'skidding' of the runway.....give me strength!

Just speculating;
lightly loaded.....all four engines at idle power......park brake not set...... crew distracted in cockpit.....a/c trundles gently away with no-one noticing!

Unheard off to 'lose brakes' on a B747! Initial journalist reports are so erroneous they are not worth listening to. Even the BBC is hopeless.

Hi Rainboe....
You may recall that Saudia B747 (-300, I think it was) at KL that was being taxied by the maintenance crew from it's remote parking position to the terminal departure gate, sometime in 2001 I think.
Anyway, they 'ran out of brakes' inexplicably, and drove it into a big 'monty drain', and wrote the thing off!
Can anyone recall the accident investigation outcome, like WHY did they have no brakes.
SpannersatKL...you probably have all the details, as I agree with your detail on the availability of brake pressure on that model (-200/-300).
I remember taxiing past it on departure, still in the ditch, when I flew for AAI, based there.

My meagre understanding of the KL incident was that he airplane was being taxied on the inboard engnes but with Normal brakes selected.....so onlt the brake accumulator to supply brakes.....that wont last long then no brakes.......the brakes did not fail the guys doing the operating did!!!

Why did a 747 have to brake on takeoff?? how did the braking system fail?
