Hello all. All pilots that is. Wannabe pilots (people who would have loved to become a pilot but didn’t for whatever reason) and office workers/damagers etc, this is not for you, especially the covert operators(cowards) amongst you mainly good folks!
Does anyone know of a thread here on Prune or elsewhere where fuel saving/use is being thrashed out by pilots?
I am interested because we all know standards are set for safety etc. But how many of these standards are truly accurate? Are these standards all necessary? When last were these standards re-visited to see if they are absolutely necessary under what conditions?
As pilots, we could engage in think-tanks about fuel usage.
With many of the current types of modern aeroplanes being flown, are the current fuel requirements appropriate?
Most of us (certainly not all) assume the fuel we take to be good because it is given on the route log as such. A lot of us even add a few drops….. for Granny etc.
Oh and lastly, please, the Heroes amongst you…….We all are threatened by the rising fuel price! I wish to start a debate, not a “What do you know, and what do you think we’ve been doing for the last X years?”
Thanks all.

Yip, US$120 + per barrel and likely to get worse. Prices have jumped some 30% this year and these kinds of prices were last seen during the early 1980's. With current global expansion, I can't see it getting any better - can you? So, as time moves on, you get the first factor which influences price - that of rising demand. Then, the resulting decreased stocks (and decreasing stocks) factor number two kicks in. Then we move onto factors such as (a) the producing cartel (OPEC), (b) Oil Speculators (c) Instability in the Middle East and (d) Refinery problems - the latter of which we know all about in South Africa - fuel shortages at Airports :ugh:

We need a renewed - or better still - new fuel resource!

the fuel carriage requirments to which you operate ae based on on safety.

if you choose to operate below them, then you will be lucky if your employer spends $5 on your reef.

Those requirements are there for a reason,,,,and all hard learnt!
when you get the sack, a prospective employer will be happy to take you on, for staying legal.

Staying legal keeps thier insurance costs down...it the ugliest cost to them after fuel

I suggest you go and take a look at the Tech Log. There are various fuel related threads:

And here I was under the impression that the "Ugliest" cost to the employer is his/her pilots. How totally mislead I have been.........

Ask your employer to fork out a couple hundreds bucks and order IATA's Guidance Material and Best Practices for Fuel and Environmental Management, third edition.
Written by industry experts, it's their combined experience of 70+ airline visits, showing a wealth of information on how to approach fuel & operational efficiency.
And yes, I'm one of them.

Cheers- Max :ok:
