Any comments or opinions from anyone who has been over there recently (in reference to the C208 job advertised on AFAP today)?

I work for TA in Port Moresby, PNG. Its a great company and the flying is amazing, i started 3 months ago, it took 150 hrs to get checked to line because I needed 1000 hrs TT for the caravan, Otherwise most guys do it in 130 hrs are so. The flying is amazing and we fly all around the country, sometimes up to 8 hrs a day. The vans all have 2 Garman 430's and full autopilot which we fly single pilot.

Any questions PM me.

Firstly, good on the young fella jumping on here and putting in a good word for his company, I hope you continue to enjoy what you do and where your doing it.

One question that I am wondering about is that the advertisement is asking for 750 hrs; if you require 1000 hrs to fly the caravan and most need 130-150 ICUS, what you gonna do for the other +100 hrs?

Seems most flying done in the low lying Gulf area with regular Kokoda's. They'd have the newest equipment in the country which must be fun. Bit of a revolving door at the moment with young fellas not hanging around for too long.

Are you sure you haven't forgotten NCA's P750? :E

Definately not talkin about the meris then are we boys?

Ah... NOPE! Haven't been up here that long yet... :}

Actually GT is pipped by Leahy's Oilmin machine BWC - and that is prettier both inside and out :ok: They may be a fugly looking machine but they sure pull a load and perform well in the highlands - there's a reason why they are multiplying! :ooh:

That would be the $$$$ aspect I imagine.
Hell, If the $$$ were better, I would probably amble back to the land of the unexpected. I quite liked driving a van.

Have to disagree with some of the negative comments on YCAR, yes it has it's problems but where doesn't these days??

The climate is great, there is plenty to do there and it's easy to fit in - at least that's how we found it. I can assure you all that there are a lot worse places to live.

Cheers.

Well, I have to agree that the climate is a positive for Canarvon.......... and after living there for two years, it would be one of the very few I could think of.
Its close proximity to Coral bay is another. :ok: thats about it though I think.

Tropic Air PNG ????
Good company, good machines (Reasonably new) and more importantly the OPS manager is a hell of a good bloke, (**** it's getting hot in here, must lift the collar and have another smoke) and most of the guys that I have know who have worked there, even from the old RH days have been excellent blokes and ended up in major airlines.

Struth, you blokes are getting it easy!

All we had were beat-up Bongos, no navaids and certainly no autopilot!!

Neither of which would have been of much use in the twice weekly 'dawn patrol scramble' out to Kagi, Efogi, Bodinumu, Manari, Naoro etc etc!!:ooh:

I never considered it hard work either. It was good fun!!:ok::ok: Sometimes bloody terrifying:eek:, but still good fun.

And agree with observation about Meris and SP. Not to be mixed, even in my days there.:=

Just ring up and speak to the Chief Pilot and ask him!

That's what I done 20 years ago before I went up there, went up for a week to check PNG out, I had secured a job on the second day I was in county. The rest is history!!!

Missus wants me to go back!!!!

Could anyone please share some thoughts on what the minimum hourly requirements are for Tropicair, or the amount of hours guys who are being hired have? As they don't have anything smaller than the C208 (which sucks) I'm not thinking of applying any time soon but I'd love to get over there once I'm qualified enough I think it would be awesome.

Kagamuga

Flying Saint: Go to the Tropicair web site; all employment contact details are there for contact. However, [email protected] will get your CV to the right people.

Jasondeno: If you think the company "sucks" for not having anything smaller than a C208 Caravan, might I suggest you do NOT apply.

If you have completed your ATPL theory, IFR, BGT; and you have 1000 hrs+ give it a go.... No touring positions available for junior Caravan pilot; live in Country.

The standard of Check and Training at Tropicair is BEST in country. The CP and his deputies take no prisoners. I know people who completed their 100 hrs ICUS on the Caravan and then failed their final check flight. No reruns.

It takes a lot of time to Check pilots into all the Caravan strips. Training is also very expensive. You would be expected to sign up for two to three years minimum

Tropicair advertise vacancies on the AFAP (Australian Federation of Air Pilots) web site when positions are forthcoming.

Very serious people !

The government set a minimum requirement for Expat flight crew; both age and flight hours, the intention being to allow National pilots to obtain qualifications and start as First officers and then move onto Command. Even on the Caravan.

Kagamuga thanks so much for the info appreciate it. Great insights to the T&C, good to know they are series about safety. I thought it would be a stretch being such a dynamic environment. I didn't mean the the company sucks. just bummed there isn't anything smaller to start off on, not their fault! Thanks for the info though, I'm originally from the tropics and want to get back, I've worked in a very similar locality in a non aviation job and loved it!

Jason, it is all about safety. A turbine engine even a single engine is safer than a piston engine more so if the piston engine is turbocharged. Mind you Avgas is such a scarce commodity or difficult to arrange and mega expensive.

Mineral resource companies avoid anything single engine, even turbines. Twin engine and airframe age limits apply to some contracts.

There is no Search and Rescue in PNG.

The operators collaborate when something goes wrong; that's the way it's done. When Tropicair experienced at turbine failure in a Caravan some years ago, and with a sad outcome, it was opposition companies first on scene to assist.
