I might need to make a trip to the Cardiff area and was looking at their fees and charges. I was quite surprised to find the landing fee a reasonable 21.00 GBP for a PA28.

Does anyone know if there are any hidden extras, such as mandatory handling etc..?

Cardiff's very GA friendly, but make sure you check the "standard VRF routes" (assuming you're not IFR of course) before your flight. No mandatory handling if you park at the flying club on the south side.

£5 landing fee and no handling wherever you park if you come to Upfield Farm instead.

Dropped a mate up there a few weeks ago. Standard Cardiff Docks arrival (from the East). Departure via Wenvoe mast to the North and then turned en route. Very friendly but I do remember the landing fee, handling etc to have been in the region of £35 (PA28 also). Watch out for St Athan, especially if Cardiff is on Rwy 12 and you join the downwind leg to the N of the field. St Athan is on the extension of the downwind leg for Cardiff 12L.

Don't go next weekend. Munster vs Toulouse in the Heineken Cup final...

Handling is only mandatory if you park on the north side. Go south to the flying club and pay there instead, then it's just £20+/- even for IFR arrivals using the ILS.

Good reminder EDDNR. After all, he might have missed No mandatory handling if you park at the flying club on the south side in the first response :ok:

there IS mandatory handling for all visiting aircraft. However, the flying school south side "tends" not to charge for this service.

Surely they wouldn't charge you for handling when you haven't been "handled"? I can understand it at the north side where you need marshalling, security screening escorting etc... but at the flying school?

Anyway, I e-mailed the Senior Admin Assistant at the Landing Charges Department and this is the reply:

Good morning

The below charges are all ex vat so please add on 17.5 vat.

As for handling, this is mandatory for the Northside of the terminal. However, if you go southside which is were our flying club is situated there is no handling charge.

As MATSPART3 states, it's the Heinneken Cup final (Rugby) in Cardiff this Saturday so Cardiff will be very busy (with limited aircraft parking - some of the visiting bizjets will probably be parked Southside aswell as on the Northside).

Also, Bristol have accepted a number of flights (as Cardiff haven't got the room to take them) so expect them to be busy aswell

It's ok, if I do end up going it won't be until next month. Phew! :}

Hey guys,

I'm hoping to fly VFR into Cardiff from Ireland on Sat for the Cup Final. I have a slot booked with Signature for 0920. I'm up to speed on the c£100 costs for the day. We're heading a C180 (or maybe the C182)....

Anyone any tips for us. Havent been in before. What routing should we expect? Will getting in and out of the airport be a disaster or is there any locals on the job?

Thanks

William

Irish Seaplane,

If you are VFR have a look at the AIP or Pooleys. Cardiff has published VFR routes, that are shown there, you'd probably come in on VFR St Hillary. If you are VFR expect to hold, the airport is running at capacity and IFR will take priority, not unusual for light a/c to hold for 20 mins at the VRPs to allow IFR in and out. If IFR expect to route AMMAN CDF.

Outbound- expect delays, looks like its going to be very busy, most aircraft departing after 2100.

Luckily I'm on a day off, so will be waving from the back garden.
