Anyone heard about problem with runway lights at YMHB earlier this week and a diversion of a B737 back to YMML?

Both the main power and backup generators failed.

In the early hours of Thursday morning a B737 freighter arrived at Hobart, and then diverted to Launceston due to a complete failure of the runway lights and standby generator system.

All of a sudden "D & G General Aviation & Questions" is becoming more interesting than "D & G Reporting Points" . . .

Back to the serious side, not a nice feeling to arrive to find no lights and then have an unscheduled diversion to a aerodrome that requires an alternate. was it a failure of the system(s), ie primary failure followed by a failure of the back up system, or did the system take a strike from the TS in the area? No doubt it will be subject of a ATSB report.

Would have been an interesting situation if both YMLT and YMML had fog.

I was under the impression if the primary lights failed due to a power failure or surge that the generator powered system came on line straight away.

When it comes to aviation, nothing is guaranteed! :E

If the lighting failure was caused by a problem in the field circuit, such as lightning strike, then it doesn't matter how many back up generators automatically kick in, the power won't get to the light fittings. Some of the major aerodromes now have two field circuits, so that if one fails, then at least every second runway edge light should be available until the problem is fixed.

Fitting a thronomister into the circuit should cure it.

I know how to fix this lighting problem, run aviation as tho a bank, then at around 4:30-5pm we simply stop operating & we can all have the W/E's off !!!:}

Should be an interesting read when ATSB release the interim report, on this incident.

Hopefully might be a wake up call for a few people in their offices, and a few bums get kicked.

Wally,

Which bank?

Actually LT is run like a bank - and a good one at that, well one that makes money for it's shareholders anyway. Do you know if you hire a car from the airport you pay a percentage of the total hire to the airport corporation? Fair enough to pay some sort of flat users fee. But if you stay a couple of extra days and drive, say, to Strahan & down to YHMB (sorry) you are filling the airport coffers with every mile on the road.

Thieving rogues, the lot of them!

Stationair8,

I agree. Hopefully the investigation will reveal a real problem that can be fixed - not something transient, nebulous or unfixable.

Cheers,

Pithblot

hahah 'plith', I thougt someone would come back with that!:ok:
I wasn't aware that the airport stitch up merchants had their hands in the pie. I am planning to come to the 'two headed land' for a bit or R&R & shall organize a hire off site, thanks for the info.
