Applecore,
Which magazine was that?
It sounds really interesting but probably a lot further North than we are going.
We are going from the UK to Norway next month, taking our car up to the Russian border by ferry around top of Norway ,and then driving back to Bergen and ferry home to UK.

We might have time for a short sightseeing flight from a local airfield, does anyone have any contacts or ideas for northern Norway?

Foneless,
Many thanks for the link,I missed it when it was posted.
Makes for very chilling reading.
Reminds me of my first cross country solo, where I convinced myself I was where I wasn't,if that makes sense.
Nowhere near as dangerous as Chuck's situation but very scary for a beginner.
After the first blind panic which probably lasted quite some seconds I remembered the CFI's advice to look at the big picture.
So I flew back to a known position and took it from there, arriving home from the SE instead of the SW!
I was really late back to the airfield but the CFI said nothing.
The next day I told him I had got a bit lost,a slight understatement!
He calmly told me he wondered where I'd been, but I wasn't lost as I got back home.
Chuck's experience and his postings are really great, please keep them coming.
Lister:)

Not in Northern Norway (although I did fly in the South), but here's a couple of suggestions:

a. Browse the Norsk Aero Klubb website http://www.nak.no/ (http://www.nak.no/motor/) (click on "klubber" for a list of clubs), phone them up and ask them about going up in one of their aeroplanes--with a club member acting as safety pilot this should be no problem whatsoever.

b. I can't remember his Pprune handle right now (I'll edit when I find it) but there is a contributor here who is an ATCO in Bodø and, I believe, a PPL as well. He has in the past given good advice on this regard (Note: I think his handle might have been M609 or something similar).

In any event, by all means go flying in Norway, you will love it.
