The existing foreign ownership rules in both countries would make such a merger virtually impossible. Besides, there's little upside in it for Westjet shareholders right now.

Not a chance.

Unless these two end up being the only two airlines left on the continent. And even then...

The guys that sell paint sure hope it happens as they would re-paint the planes in what colour ?

as they would re-paint the planes in what colour ?

From the perspective of an old farm boy, hopefully a colour that does not resemble what comes out of the hind end of a newborne calf! Which means Westjet's scheme would prevail.

Perhaps this rumour is why the westjet shares took a beating ?

Interesting. I have smelled a little smoke regarding this also. my guess would be some kind of code share.

Any more specifics re: the rumour down south?

WestJet inks partnership deal with Southwest Airlines (http://www.canada.com/vancouversun/news/story.html?id=64a7bab7-9c3c-4e6d-a5e9-94407aa06066)

Not a merger, but it's a first for LCCs. WS and SN code sharing as reported by the Vancouver Sun.

Durfy was on BNN yesterday afternoon. He said Westjet's connection with Southwest could allow it to obtain fuel at a better price using Southwest's large purchasing power. Also, Westjet might use Southwest's maintenance facilities in the US. So it's a good deal for Westjet.
