I do wonder how the Captain was supposed to check his airplane while in flight?

Some aircraft can display tyre pressures/brake temperatures etc on screens or gauges inside the aircraft.

It was good ATC procedure to mention to the captain what had been found on the runway.:)

The controllers were telling inbound aircraft the airport was closed due to "FOD on the runway" - turned out to be a fairly large piece!
