The fact is George, that the job of an ATS inspector has changed over the last few years, from being a hands on Inspector of units to being, for the most part, an auditor who is increasingly bound by European regulations and the need to attend meetings instead of being out at the units.

Being an ATS Inspector used to be a very popular onward & upward move for ATCOs and although the posts were still advertised, they were filled very quickly by experienced and for the most part, people who commanded respect.

These days, the posts are frequently advertised, have a high turnover of ATCOs who want to make a difference but quickly realise they're getting nowhere and most return to operational controlling.

It's a job I wouldn't touch with a barge pole.

Is that why they tend to employ many ex RAF controllers with no civil experience?
