Pilots and their unions claim that the FAA and American Airlines have conspired to hush incidents of windshield failure, and produce an e-mail that they say supports their allegation. See

All I know is what I've read in this article, so I don't really have an opinion either way (a single mass media article is a notoriously poor source of information), but I thought it would be of interest to others here.

I had the cockpit windscreen of a B777 shatter in front of me in 2005. Very startling! Feedback from the company about it? Nil, nada, nothing.

You surely don't mean that the entire windscreen panel shattered? Perhaps you mean that one layer of the windscreen panel shattered?

I've had several of the latter but none of the former.

I do agree that it certainly gets your attention when it first happens to you.
